ATTENTION
POTENTIAL
TUTORS!

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer literacy tutor, take a look at the “How to Volunteer” section to find the schedule of Tutor Orientation and Tutor Training sessions. Then fill out a Tutor Application and send it in to us. We will be in touch with you!

If you have questions about becoming a literacy tutor, please email us at info@lvagnh.org or call 776-5899 (New Haven) or 235-1714 (Meriden).

We are always looking for new tutors to work with the many adult students who need help, so please tell your friends about us.

THANK YOU FOR
YOUR INTEREST!

YOU CAN BECOME A LITERACY VOLUNTEERS TUTOR!

1. Go to our website, www.lvagnh.org. Fill out and send in your application. We will contact you and send you the training schedule.

2. Attend the Tutor Orientation session for more information about what to expect from this volunteer experience.

3. Complete the Thinkfinity Online Training by logging onto www.thinkfinity.com. Just click on PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, click on FREE TRAINING, scroll down to the box titled “Thinkfinity Literacy Network Offerings”, click on REGISTER, scroll down to the course “Principles of Adult Learning” and click on the "Enroll Now" link.

4. Attend the Tutor Training course.

• All tutors attend Session 1, the All Tutor Session on “Engaging the Learner”.

• Tutors then choose to attend either the Basic Literacy training or the ESOL training (you are welcome to attend both!). There are two training sessions for each.

5. Complete two observations. You may observe Literacy Volunteers tutors or Adult Education teachers (a list of observation sites/times will be provided for you).

6. After completing your observations, meet with Literacy Volunteers staff to discuss your tutoring assignment. They will advise you on resources and materials you can use with your student(s) and will give you background and assessment information about the student(s) you will be working with.

7. Start tutoring!

8. Reconnect with your training group and Literacy Volunteers staff at a Roundtable discussion after you have started tutoring to share experiences and ideas.

9. Attend Literacy Volunteers workshops and social events throughout the year.
Enjoy tutoring! We look forward to working closely with you.
