Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven held its Greater New Haven Program End of Year Celebration on June 27th in the Community room at Gateway Community College. It was an occasion filled with inspiration, heartfelt stories, and a strong sense of community.
Dr. Rose Ellis, the esteemed Dean of Academic Affairs at Gateway, graced the event with her Welcome Address, establishing the atmosphere for an evening dedicated to honoring and celebrating remarkable literacy achievements.
The event brought together a diverse group of attendees, including tutors, students, board members, and staff. Among the highlights of the evening were the introductions made by Sarah Elanaya, the Basic Literacy Program Manager, and Kathleen McKenna, the ESOL Program Manager. They proudly presented their respective tutors and students, who took center stage to read their Hear Our Voices writing pieces. Tutor speakers, Doug Logan and Laura Fawcett set the tone for the evening by sharing their experiences working with students and what they learned as tutors, shedding light on the profound impact tutors can have on students’ lives.
As each student took the spotlight to read their essay, the room was filled with admiration and appreciation. Their stories served as a powerful testament to the transformative impact that literacy can have on individuals and communities, enabling them to achieve their educational, career, and quality of life goals.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated volunteer tutors. Your commitment and support have been vital to the success of our programs. The impact you have made on the lives of our students is immeasurable, and we are deeply grateful for your invaluable contributions.
We would also like to extend our deepest appreciation to our exceptional staff, dedicated board members, and our “Partners in Literacy.” Your unwavering efforts, commitment, and collaboration have been instrumental in advancing our shared goal, where we envision a future in which the power of literacy enables all adults to thrive in their communities.
A big Thank You to Gateway Community College for generously allowing us to host our event in your wonderful Community Room and to the Gateway Education Technical Department and the Building Facilities Department for their invaluable assistance throughout the event.
Congratulations to our students! Your hard work, dedication, and accomplishments are truly commendable and inspire us all, and we celebrate your remarkable accomplishments.
