“It’s in My Hands”: Three Students Committed to Themselves

Three students in our Basic Literacy Program in the Valley – Vanessa Caldwell, Martha Navarrete, and Joan Phillips, have a deep investment in being the best versions of themselves. Each has been with us for an impressive duration: Vanessa for 20 years, Martha for 7, and Joan for 8. Each of them has the goal of improving their reading skills in order to help them become more independent. Currently, our program is the only one in the Valley region dedicated to helping students develop reading skills beyond the goals of GED preparation or workforce readiness.

When asked why they have wanted to stay in the program this number of years, Vanessa responded, “Because I love it! There is an old Southern saying, ‘When you feed somebody, they don’t want to leave.’ No one can pay me to stop coming here!”

We applaud their dedication and determination!
