
Partners in Literacy
It’s never too late to improve your reading and English communication (speaking and understanding) or math skills.
Adults who would like to be tutored at Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven must be over the age of 18. From beginner to advanced skill levels, our adult literacy classes offer flexible days and times to fit many different needs. All classes are free.
Literacy Volunteers offers three types of classes: Basic Literacy, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Math.
Basic Literacy
Literacy Volunteers offers free Basic Literacy classes for adults who speak English but want to improve their reading, comprehension and writing skills.
- We have small group classes in the morning, afternoon and evening.
- Classes are usually twice a week.
- We hold classes at our offices, libraries and community organizations around New Haven, Meriden/Wallingford and the Valley.
- To attend our classes, you must have officially withdrawn from the K-12 school system.
- Students must call to make an appointment to register for classes.

Literacy Volunteers is accredited by the national literacy association ProLiteracy. We are supported by Connecticut Department of Education funds, private foundations and community grants, as well as donations from individuals and businesses.
Literacy Volunteers is part of the Literacy Resource Center at 5 Science Park, New Haven, along with New Haven Reads and Concepts for Adaptive Learning. We are a member of the Coalition on Adult Basic Education, Connecticut Association for Adult and Continuing Education and Chambers of Commerce in the towns we serve.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Literacy Volunteers offers free English communication classes for adults who speak other languages. These classes focus on vocabulary, pronunciation, listening and speaking everyday American English.

The group will discuss United States history, geography, and government, and practice for the U. S. Naturalization Interview.

Math Tutoring
Math tutoring is offered in New Haven and Meriden for adults. Students work one-on-one with a tutor or in small classes. We welcome all ability levels– from basic math to algebra.
