What We Do

Literacy Volunteers offers two main programs:

  • Basic Literacy is offered to native English speakers who are reading and writing at low literacy levels.
  • English As a Second Language for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is for adults who want to learn to speak, read, write and understand English. Many of these students are recent immigrants and refugees to the U.S. We hold weekly classes during the day and evening at one of more than 40 sites in the community.

We also offer a Community Book Bank in Meriden where we accept donations of children’s books. So far, we have given more than 75,000 of these books to families, schools and agencies in the community.

Our mission is to empower adults through literacy. The partnerships between adult students and their tutors helps individuals and families reach their educational, career and quality of life goals. Our vision is a future in which the power of literacy enables all adults to thrive in their communities.
